Tough Love

IMG_2484Hi, my loves!  Hope everyone had a great weekend and an amazing Cinco de Mayo!  I, for one, will find any excuse to eat Mexican food. What, you say it’s your birthday? – let’s have Mexican food! What, you got a parking ticket? – let’s have Mexican food!  You see, it’s that easy for me to turn any situation into an excuse for Mexican food. Wait… how did this post turn into talking about food? Ummm…. because I likey food… a lot. HA!  Well, I will have a recipe on my page later this week for shrimp tacos, so check that out. Now, on to the real reason for this post… My amazing outfit!

I really love love love this look!  You probably noticed from my previous posts, I am very much a girly girl. Polka dots, pink, pearls, ect. I’m oozing girliness, but every girl has that tough side and we like to show it off once in awhile. And while this outfit has more of an edge, it still showcases the fact that I am very much a woman – a sexy and confident woman. I will rock what I want, how I want. Snakeskin print heels and a jean jacket? – Sure, why not. Wear a studded bracelet on one arm and bangles on another? – Why yes, I think I will.  Fashion is all about taking chances and risks. Some pay off and some don’t. Bottom line here – If you felt amazing wearing it then that’s all that matters. And I had fun wearing this outfit!

Today’s outfit: Jean jacket: thrifted; tee: Wet Seal; Jeans: old (Kohl’s –So brand); Shoes: old (Kohl’s Jennifer Lopez collection); Aviators: Forever21; Studded cuff bracelet: old (Kohl’s – Candies – similar style here); Bangle bracelets: Forever21; Flower ring: Forever21; Beaded hoop earrings: Forever21;  Purse: Nine West; Nails: High Maintenance by OPI

Color my world

Pink & BlueHappy Monday, darlings! Is the weekend over already? I mean really over? They go by way too quick! On Sunday I wore this brightly colored outfit.  I love mixing vibrant blues and pinks. My hubby even commented on how much he liked my outfit, and called it “fun.”  For my hubby to say that means we’ve found a winner!

I love the way you can dress this outfit up or down.  In Los Angeles it can be hot, hot, hot during the day and then it cools down in the evening.  I always have to have a cardigan or light jacket near when the evening comes calling. That’s why this outfit is perfect for LA weather! And I loved pairing this outfit with a floral tote bag. Great for throwing things in, and off you go!  Plus, I carry a smaller clutch in my tote filled with the essentials, so when the day turns to evening I just slip into my heels and jacket; grab my clutch out of my tote bag and I’m off to dinner! I get so excited over the endless possibilities of fashion, especially when little things can transition an outfit from day to evening without a lot of effort!

Garlic Shrimp Salad

Garlic Shrimp Salad

Garlic Shrimp Salad

Hi, loves! Hope everyone is having a lovely Sunday! Here in Los Angeles it’s been a picture perfect weekend. Summer is calling and as the days are warming up I tend to want more salads and fresh fruit.  During the winter months I am a sucker for soups and homemade mac & cheese. Mmmmm….but I am definitely paying for those choices now! Thank God one piece bathing suits are on trend this season, so I can hide my little tummy and break out my bikini later in the season once I’ve eaten enough salad to trim down!

I have always enjoyed finding new ways to make a salad go from “eh” to “amazing!”  And although this technically isn’t a recipe I still hope you enjoy my spin on an otherwise hum drum salad! The end result is a delicious salad with a kick. The dressing I use has a spicy and sweet flavor. I feel it brings all the ingredients together nicely.

What you need:

Spinach leaves
Baby lettuce mix
shrimp (whatever size you choose)
crumbled feta cheese
grape tomatoes
kalamata olives
jalapeno slices
Texas Garlic Toast
balsamic parmesan asiago dressing (Kraft anything dressing)

Sauté shrimp with a little olive oil and sprinkle shrimp with garlic powder, basil, and a little salt.  Sauté about 5 minutes. Set aside to coolSaute shrimp

While you are sautéing your shrimp put garlic toast into preheated oven (set at 425). I use garlic toast as croutons. Hubby and I tend to enjoy the texture and flavor better than a box or bag of store bought croutons. Bake these until crunchy – about 7 minutes (oven times may very). Once baked pull out of oven and set aside to cool. (I use one piece of toast on my salad, and my hubby prefers two). Garlic toast

Prepare salad with remaining ingredients (add or take away as you want). Top with shrimp, salad dressing, and cut up garlic toast. Enjoy!

My lastest makeup find!

Wet n Wild Retro Pink Silk Finish Lipstick

Wet n Wild Retro Pink Silk Finish Lipstick

Hello, darlings! Just a quick post to tell you about an amazing little find that I purchased on a whim at Walgreen’s yesterday afternoon from the Wet n Wild beauty line.

I was pleasantly surprised by this lipstick. It’s from Wet n Wild in the shade Retro Pink.  It has good staying power (like seriously good) and vibrant color. It can be a little drying, but still very much worth the purchase. And it was only 99 cents! Still, even with it being so cheap I actually liked it better than some of my high end lipsticks.  Just layer a little lip balm over it to add moisture to your pout. Seriously good stuff from Wet n Wild beauty. This is great for making a bold lip statement. This particular shade has a purple undertone, but it’s subtle (think lilac or lavender), and I find that I can’t get enough of this lipstick. I think I’m in love with this shade of pink! It definitely turns heads! And if this color doesn’t tickle your fancy they have other colors. With their wide variety of shades I’m sure you’ll find the perfect shade of beautiful for you! Take a look at their colors here.

Sweet & Girly

Chambray and yellow sundressHappy Monday my darlings! I just want to share one of my favorite looks. With the weather heating up nothing says warm weather like a sundress. Long, short, mid length – doesn’t matter. It’s one of my go-to’s when I don’t have a lot of time to spend getting ready. And as the days get even hotter who really wants to spend time getting all dolled up when we’d rather be in front of an A/C vent eating a popsicle? – or is that just me?

It was a pretty warm day in Los Angeles yesterday, and I could have worn my sundress sans the blouse over it, but I couldn’t resist adding a chambray shirt. I just tied it a little above my waist and instantly my outfit was transformed. I added some accessories, and a few soft curls to my hair to give my look a touch of sweetness. I completed the look with brown ankle boots to give it that little bit of country feel. Now, if I had a real pair of cowboy boots I would have taken it to a whole new level!

Hope everyone has a great week ahead, and that Friday is here before you know it! I’m trying to fight these allergies, but they are really kicking my behindy (my word mesh for behind and hiney)! Have a great day my lovelies, and stay amazing! Muah! xoxox

My look: Sundress: Thrifted (You can find similar styles here and here); blouse: Nordstrom Rack; Bracelet: old (you can find similar styles here); Rings: Forever21; Boots: old from Forever21; Canvas tote: old (You can find at places like Ross or T.J. Maxx); watch: vintage Bulova

Raspberry Streusel Bars

Raspberry Streusel Bars

Happy Friday, loves! Hope you have a great weekend planned! Me and the hubby will be off to the beach tomorrow, but before we take off for our day in the sun we will have a cup of coffee and a raspberry streusel bar! They are great for breakfast or a sweet treat after dinner. They are quick and easy to make, and they are delicious!

You can have fun changing the ingredients around, if you’d like. I used milk chocolate chips, but you can try semi chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, or even mix two kinds. You could try dark brown sugar for a more intense flavor, or try a different type of fruit (or jam) like blueberries, blackberries, ect.   That’s the beauty of baking – make it your own!

1  1/4 cup quick oats (I only had rolled oats on hand, but a quick spin in the food processor and I had quick oats!)Raspberry Streusel Bars
1  1/4 cup flour (I prefer oat flour, but used all purpose this time)
1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 stick of butter softened or melted
1 cup raspberry jam, preserves, or frozen berries (I used frozen, so it wouldn’t be too sweet)
3/4 cup chocolate chips

Combine oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Stir in butter until mixture is crumbly.

Reserve 1 cup of mixture, set aside. Press remaining mixture into bottom of an 8 in square pan. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes. After removing pan from the oven spread raspberries evenly over crust to within 1/4 inch of the edge. Sprinkle with 1/2 of the chocolate chips. IMG_1935
Combine remaining crumb mixture and remaining chocolate chips, sprinkle on top of raspberries, pressing lightly into fruit. IMG_1936

Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes or until top is golden brown.

All done!

Forgot to take them out right away, so the edges are slightly toasty, but thy are still delicious!

Enjoy!  These also freeze well, so feel free to make a double batch and freeze for future cravings!

A Midwest summer’s night

It was another muggy summer night in the Midwest. The window was open, but for what reason she wasn’t sure. The air was sticky and humid, not the slightest bit of wind was coming through that screened in window. The loud hum from the box fan was always a welcome sound. Not sure what it was that comforted her. Maybe the sound helped lullaby her pain, to help her keep her mind on just that moment – the stickiness of her skin, her damp hair clinging to her face and neck, her little torn night gown with its faded pink hearts. At five years old she had so many burdens on her tiny little shoulders. She didn’t understand them; she didn’t know they were burdens. She never knew it was heartache she felt. All she knew is that it was hard to fall asleep most nights. It wasn’t just the heat that kept her awake. She never understood why she couldn’t fall asleep. She would lay there staring into the darkness until all she could see were hundreds of little red dots. It reminded her of a television channel on the old tv’s that had nothing playing on it, and all you saw was what her daddy called “snow.” She would close her eyes so tight hoping they’d disappear, but they were still there. They were always there. Why wouldn’t they go away? After awhile she got used to this happening and even tried making them change colors because red was getting boring. Anything to keep her tiny mind from wandering to more grown up things – like, if there was money to pay the electric bill that month.

When you are a child everything becomes a game. Somehow everything becomes less painful when you make believe. Imaginary places, imaginary things – these were the things that got her through. She had a brother only fourteen months older than her. Having someone so close in age made for some fun times, as well as some knock down drag out moments. Even though she was the younger sister, she was always the one who took care of her brother. He was never quite right. It wasn’t until a few years later that all the madness and insanity inside him began to take form. He was an odd boy – very shy, withdrawn, and talked out of the corner of his mouth – never making eye contact with anyone for more than a few moments, except for his family – he was always most comfortable around them, especially his baby sister. At 6 years old he had just finished kindergarten and despite social awkwardness he was moving on to the first grade that fall. His sister was quite opposite. She was talkative and outgoing. She was upset when he was going to kindergarten and she had to stay home. “Why can’t I go to school too, mommy?” she asked pouting and crossing her arms. “Because you can’t read yet,” her mommy said, hoping this would suffice her. Being the stubborn little girl she was she marched over to her little stack of golden books in the corner of the dining room and picked one up exclaiming, “Yes, I can read, mommy!” and she began to read aloud knowing very well she was making up words. Her mommy laughed. “Nice try, but you also need to know how to spell and write your full name, and you need to know your phone number and address by heart before you start kindergarten.” “Then teach me,” the little girl demanded. Her mother smiled and said, “Well, you also need to learn how to tie your shoes, so let’s start with that.” Her mother was gentle and sweet, but never had much self worth and married the first man that showed interest in her. The little girl’s father was a rare breed… he was crazy to be blunt. He believed he was a prophet of God called to speak to the masses. He was a dreamer. He believed one day God was going to raise him up. They would be millionaires, and as a family they would travel the world ministering the gospel. He sat around every day playing his guitar and singing his songs to God. The thing was – he was very talented. He wasted his talent chasing after a dream that would never come true. He spent hours playing his guitar, praying, or reading his bible. He ignored the fact he had a family to take care of. He wouldn’t allow his wife to work, so the little girl and her family lived off the government.

They lived in the projects, but the little girl just saw it as home. This is where she grew up. This was all she knew. To her standing in line at the soup kitchen every Wednesday was fun because at the end of the meal they would go to this big window were a lady would hand them two brown bags of groceries. You could always count on a brand name cereal like Lucky Charms or Trix. Plus, there was always a pack of bubble yum for the little girl and her brother. The little girl was never ashamed when on the middle of every month her mother would give her and her brother a one dollar food stamp each, sending them through the grocery line to buy a small piece of candy for twenty five cents, so she could get the change back to buy freezer bags or feminine products for herself, since they had no cash. And you most certainly can’t buy those things on food stamps. Sometimes she would send them through the line twice just to get enough change, if it was feminine products she needed. Back in those days you would get booklets of food stamp and you would receive back change if the total didn’t round up to the exact dollar, unlike now where you use a card and the amount is deducted. Since things were always tight they rarely ever had cash, so the little girl and her brother knew the drill and went through the line, handing their one dollar food stamp to the cashier. The cashier always gave one of two looks. The first was a look of compassion and the other look was disgust. It was a few years later, when the little girl began to grow up that she grasped the full understanding of the situation. To her at the time, it was normal. It was normal for mommy and daddy to stay at home and not have jobs. It was normal for daddy to stand over her bed in the middle of the night with a belt and spank her for not doing the dishes, or for not folding the laundry, or for grinding her teeth. It was normal to wonder if they would eat tomorrow, or what was in that can without a label that they were given from the shelter.  Could it be peas or fruit cocktail, there was only one way to find out – open it. Powdered milk was milk, government cheese was the only kind of cheese, and spam was meat. This was normal. This was life.

So, as she lay there trying to find some comfort in the heat of that summer night, she thought about how she would be starting kindergarten that fall, and maybe she could make a friend. She so wanted friends. Her father was very strict and wouldn’t allow her to go to or have sleepovers. She wasn’t allowed to be a little girl. Being a girl seemed to be a sin to her father, and even worse, as the years went by it came to prove that turning into a woman was the ultimate sin, but that story is for another time. She wanted to see what was out there? Did everyone’s mommy and daddy act just like hers? To her, life as she knew it was normal. The burdens on her tiny shoulders were normal, but yet something inside her knew there was something more out there, and dare she imagine – better. As she lay there she heard the train whistle in the distance – even through the loud hum of the box fan, and she smiled as her eyelids began to droop. Life was beginning for her and it wouldn’t be an easy journey, but even at her young age of five, she was already strong enough to handle it.

Let Fashion Define You

Let Fashion Define You

What can I say, I’m a sucker for polka dots (if you haven’t figured that out already). There is something so playful about them.  And I am very much into the vintage style. I have an obsession for anything from the 1940’s – 1960’s, so this outfit feeds into that obsession.  I added a pair of rocker boots to give this outfit an edge. Your eyes take in this sweet look until your eyes travel down to the boots. It gives a bold statement that says – “I’m sweet like candy, but we’re talking the red hots kinda candy.”  I want my outfits to give you a glimpse into my personality without saying a word.  I paired my polka dot blouse with high waisted navy blue dress shorts. I love pairing white, black, navy, and red. Classic colors look elegant and polished when worn together. Have a great day, darlings! And remember, fashion defines us. What does your style say about you?
